Comment from the CCC and proposals for action

n.a.

The following evaluation on transparency, code implementation and monitoring of labour standards is based on a research by the CCC - Germany in 2008.

Transparency

Regarding its sourcing and buying practices, ALDI, like its business partners, does not disclose any information.

Formal commitment to labour standards

ALDI has not published a code of conduct.

Code implementation and purchasing practices

Regarding its sourcing and buying practices, ALDI, like its business partners, does not disclose any information.

However, according to different sources - the most recent being the SÜDWIND publication "Aldi’s clothing bargains: Discount buys discounting standards?" (Wick 2007) – ALDI sources most of its T&C products from China, Bangladesh Turkey and Indonesia. According to an article in the TextilWirtschaft magazine of 1 April 2004, the following German companies - Rieker, JCK Holding, Gebra, Miles, Promtex, Baumhüter, Multiline and Miro Radici – are suppliers of ALDI. SÜDWIND found out that the company HUBER also supplies ALDI

SÜDWIND also found out that the following German agents are business partners of ALDI: Furlano, emwegetex, Face to Face, Hanson, Euromod, Radici Trading, Dario Markenartikelvertrieb, S&R Textil, Florett Textil and the European Clothing Company.

Still according to SÜDWIND, the following labels are sold by Aldi Süd: Skin to Skin, Blue Motion, Dormia, Flagship, Bourbon, Watson’s, Royal Class, Mary Anne, Laura Stein, Crane Sports, Face to Face, Linda Cliffort, Patrick O’Connor. Aldi Nord sells its T&C goods under the labels Luciano, Enrico Mort, Queentex, Pocopiano, Papagino, Cecilia Classics, Novitesse, Sanfor Knit, Shamp etc.

SÜDWIND’s publication on ALDI reports massive labour rights violations, especially in Chinese supplier factories, such as child labour, employers withholding wages for several months, demanding financial deposits from workers, etc. It must be presumed that this is one of the consequences of ALDI’s buying power over its suppliers as well as the pressure ALDI brings to bear on prices and lead times. These trends are similar to those identified in a number of studies of global supply chains and retailing during the few past years.

Monitoring and Verification

It does not belong to any multi-stakeholder initiative.
